On March 6, 2006 South Dakota Governor Mike Rounds signed into a law a bill that would ban all abortions in his state with the only exception being the life of the mother.  This law directly conflicts with the 1973 Supreme Court Ruling known as Roe v Wade in which the high court said that states could not make abortion illegal in most circumstances.
Even those who support the new South Dakota law don't believe it will go into effect any time soon.  Rather, they are hoping it will be challenged legally and will make its way to the Supreme Court where they hope the now more conservative court will reverse the 1973 ruling.
According to a recent Fox News/ Opinion Dynamics poll 59% of Americans oppose this law and only 35% support it.
